META-Enhanced Subject | IGCSE Chemistry – Major in Medicine

      IGCSE

      28 Nov, 2024

      17 : 47

      Introduction

The META-Enhanced IGCSE Chemistry with a major in Medicine offers an innovative approach to learning fundamental chemistry concepts by integrating real-world applications from the field of medicine. This unique curriculum explores the chemical principles behind pharmaceuticals, diagnostic tools, and medical treatments.

In addition to the standard IGCSE Chemistry syllabus, the program includes periodic online expert classes, case studies, experimental investigations, and optional medical immersion programs. Students gain a deeper understanding of how chemistry impacts healthcare and medical advancements.

      Career and Interest Pathways

This course is ideal for aspiring medical professionals and those interested in fields such as:

      • Pharmacy
      • Medical Research
      • Medical Laboratory Work
      • Science and Medicine Intersection

It provides a strong foundation for further studies and careers in medicine and healthcare-related fields.

      Assessment

Alongside the IGCSE Chemistry assessments conducted at the school, students build a portfolio of experiences including:

      • Medical Case Studies
      • Experimental Investigations
      • Immersive Medical Programs

While the portfolio does not contribute directly to IGCSE results, it significantly enhances university applications.

      Key Topics

      • Acids, Bases, and pH in Biological Systems
      • Functional Groups and Their Reactivity
      • Mechanisms of Drug Action
      • Drug-Receptor Interactions
      • Structure and Function of Carbohydrates, Proteins, and Lipids
      • Enzyme Activity and Inhibition
      • Reaction Rates and Factors
      • Le Chatelier's Principle and Its Applications in Medicine

      Timeline

      Year Time Content
Year 1 Mid-October Experimental Research Assignment
Year 1 Mid-December Case Studies Portfolio
Year 1 End of April Medical Investigation Project 1
Year 2 Mid-October Experimental Research Assignment
Year 2 Mid-December Case Studies Portfolio
Year 2 End of April Medical Investigation Project 2

Note that medical research investigations maybe integrate with IPQ/EPQ projects in YW schools or IAs and EEs in YC schools. You should inform us if you are interested in this support.

      Resources

The following resources and tools are essential for this course:

      • Online tools and apps: AI-assistant tools, virtual labs, simulations, and case studies
      • Medical Case Study Workbook
      • Foye’s Medicinal Chemistry
      • Online simulations and virtual laboratories
      • Virtual laboratories.

      Advanced Support

      • Medical Immersion Programs: twice a year, we offer a one-week experience in functioning hospital where students will shadow doctors, participate in medical workshops, work in groups to solve medical cases using AI-guided technologies, and conduct medical experimental investigations. The programme offers 4 specialisations: medicine, medical-allied (psychology, sports science, dentistry), medical technology and medical leadership.
      • Work-Integrated Learning (WIL): students can apply to complete an internship in their local hospital, clinic, research lab or medical-related company. The programme can take from 3 to 6 months part-time involving working on research or an industry project for 1 – 3 hours per week. Our EdFutures team will support the learning and programme with additional connections to experts and advanced learning programmes.
      • Medical Competitions: EdFutures can provide support for students interested in participating in external academic competitions, such as HOSA. Students should reach out to EdFutures with information about the competitions they are interested in and EdFutures will establish opportunities for helping you to prepare.
