On 11 September, the Yew Chung Yew Wah Education Network (YCYW) and The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) in the United Kingdom officially announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on academic cooperation. The two institutions will cooperate and promote the development and innovations in integrating Chinese and Western education in the field of art.
Representing YCYW, Dr Esther Chan, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (K-12 Education), signed the MOU with Professor Rachel Dickson, Deputy Director Academic at The Glasgow School of Art.
As a result of this MOU, the two institutions will have in-depth cooperation in the following areas:
Exchange of materials, publications and information
Exchange of professors and research staff
Exchange of students
Increased academic collaboration
Defining articulation agreements for advanced credit
This cooperation has resulted from the same educational philosophy and a mutual commitment to sharing high-quality academic resources.
Founded more than 90 years ago, YCYW has always believed that the arts are an integral part of holistic education, and has regarded "Aligning with Culture and Arts" as one of its three core missions.
YCYW's extensive arts programmes span from Early Childhood Education to Secondary School Education, guiding all students to develop their creativity and imagination, and shaping their spirit and character. Our international faculty members provide a solid foundation for students aspiring to a career in the arts.
Founded in 1845, GSA is internationally recognised as one of Europe's leading tertiary institutions in the creative visual disciplines. Throughout its long history, GSA has been dedicated to nurturing innovative artists, designers, and architects.
Through its excellence in teaching and research, as well as its significant role in the creative industries of Glasgow, Scotland, and beyond, the school has brought together numerous emerging talents in the fields of art, design, and architecture.
Previously, the two institutions had engaged in several in-depth exchanges. In June this year, Mr Thomas Greenough, Head of International Academic Development at GSA, visited YWIES Shanghai Gubei. During his visit, Mr Greenough expressed great appreciation for the school's art programme, faculty, and campus facilities, as well as for the artwork of the students.
In August this year, students from YWIES Shanghai Gubei and YWIES Zhejiang Tongxiang participated in an art study tour to Somerset, United Kingdom, organised by YCYW's Careers and University Guidance Office. During this tour, professors from GSA visited the YCYW Knowle Hall campus in Somerset and offered guidance to the students regarding the creation of their portfolios.
Building on such academic cooperation, both institutions will develop deeper collaboration and exchanges across various fields, thus providing YCYW students with better art education resources and more flexible pathways for further studies.
Moreover, by jointly exploring innovative approaches to integrating Chinese and Western art education, both parties will work together to discover new possibilities for education in the modern era.
