"The campus is like a city!" exclaimed Devin, a YWIES Shanghai Gubei student, after arriving at the Future School campus of YWIES Zhejiang Tongxiang.
In March 2024, YCYW launched the Future School Programme at YWIES Zhejiang Tongxiang. The initiative introduced an innovative curriculum and campus space, thereby creating a new educational ecosystem for the future.
On 21 and 22 November, more than 40 students and teachers from YWIES Shanghai Gubei immersed themselves in the rich curriculum and diverse learning spaces of the Future School. What is the Future School like? Let's hear from the "experience officers" who visited the school.
Put on the VR headset, create three-dimensional artworks in three-dimensional space, and experience the magic of "traversing the canvas".
Ray - YWIES Shanghai Gubei student
The campus is vast and offers a wide range of curricular activities. I am interested in technology, and had the opportunity to learn a lot, particularly through the VR experience and the drone course.
Mr William Ordonez - META Digital Media and Design Teacher, EdFutures Division
It was really exciting for our students to participate in the wonderful collaboration between both schools! The students had the chance to see how the environment can spark creativity and exploration; and how it can help them achieve their own potential. The experience at Future School showed the students that their school can be a fantastic tool or catalyst to help them become who they aspire to be.
Experience the excitement and fun of flying and operating a drone in the unique drone course.
Devin - YWIES Shanghai Gubei student
I really enjoyed our visit to YWIES Zhejiang Tongxiang. The campus is like a city, and the curriculum is rich and varied. I particularly liked the drone course. Being able to 'fly freely' in the sky felt especially liberating. I once tried flying a drone a long time ago, but I never studied about drones in a systematic way. During the course, I gained a lot of operational knowledge, and I also piloted a First Person View (FPV) drone.
Mr Jason Zheng, Drone Course Instructor YWIES Zhejiang Tongxiang
The students experienced the thrill of flying an FPV drone. They felt as if they could soar through clouds and fog with enhanced vision, exploring the sky and beyond. This experience not only helped the students consolidate their theoretical knowledge through practice, but also made up for their not being able to fly a real drone firsthand because of the geographical limitations. Nevertheless, they could realise their dream of flying.
Andy YWIES Shanghai Gubei student
The activities were great, and the campus environment is very modern. What impressed me most was the drone course, which was my first experience. This kind of class can make people feel very advanced and 'high-class'.
Assemble and programme robots hands-on to stimulate creative thinking and interest in technology and science!
Maggie - YWIES Shanghai Gubei student
In the VR experience class, we explored the universe, tried to draw in 3D space, created robots, and printed our own 3D models. I found every course novel and enjoyable.
Work as a team, explore boldly, and express yourselves freely in a game of colours.
Maggie - YWIES Shanghai Gubei student
In the silk screen printing project, we had plenty of room for imagination. We could print various patterns based on our own ideas, and create three-dimensional works by cutting and shaping flat pieces. This process made me feel very creative.
Mr Myko Li - Fine Arts and Basic Art Teacher YWIES Shanghai Gubei
The equipment is complete and professional; it gives an amazing feeling. Here, students have more freedom and choice in their artistic creations, and ample room to explore. It's great that the students had the opportunity to experience this campus.
Write, direct, and perform a great play in a state-of-the-art theatre!
Morgan - YWIES Shanghai Gubei student
Having studied the violin, I have some knowledge of stage presence and lighting, as well as some performance experience. The performing arts class further enriched my understanding, and I enjoyed learning and rehearsing on a grand, professional stage.
Dr Man Cheung - Drama Teacher YWIES Zhejiang Tongxiang
What I really enjoy is showing our campus to visitors because we know how beautiful it is. During the introduction, I told the students that this is one of the finest theatres in China, in terms of the hardware, the stage, the size, the number of seats, the setup, and everything else. I think anyone, anywhere, would be envious of a space like this.
Ms Renee Wu - Music Teacher YWIES Shanghai Gubei
The teacher responsible for the theatre's IT equipment was very helpful, and the students learned a lot about lighting control, sound mixing, and staging. This experience will definitely benefit my future teaching. We will continue to rehearse stage performances. I hope we will have the opportunity to perform at the YWIES Zhejiang Tongxiang theatre in the future, and share our learning results with everyone, and engage in discussions, exchanges, and reflections together.
Enjoy classic movies in the small theatre of the student residence hall and relive the joyful times of your childhood on the playground.
Mr David Leung - Director of Fashion Design, YCYW
This future school is not just about art, design, and fashion; students can also experience a meta space, digital media, VEX Robotics, and the new facilities for sports, including golf simulation, et cetera. The Tongxiang campus is already a large school, and with the future school's remodelling, we will have even more opportunities to enhance the students' experience and educational journey.
The two-day exchange has become precious memories for the teachers and students of the two schools.
Mr Quinn An, Head of the General Department and a STEM teacher at YWIES Shanghai Gubei, expressed his gratitude to YWIES Zhejiang Tongxiang for generously sharing the facilities and resources.
He said, Collaborating with the YWIES Zhejiang Tongxiang team on teaching and learning activities has given us the opportunity to exchange teaching ideas and methodologies, achieve mutual learning, and improve together. This deepening of the relationship between the two schools has been a realisation of the concept of 'Building a Learning Community'. This has fostered a sense of familial warmth and solidarity.
According to Ms Christine Carey, Western Co-Principal of YWIES Zhejiang Tongxiang,
Such partnerships not only allow YWIES Shanghai Gubei's students to utilize our facilities but also foster meaningful interactions between students from both campuses. This collaboration enriches the educational experience for everyone involved. In addition, our teachers and leaders relish the chance to connect and work together, further strengthening and expanding our school community.
Yifan, a Grade 11 YWIES Zhejiang Tongxiang student, who plans to study art, said that he has greatly benefited from the exchange with students at YWIES Shanghai Gubei, and looks forward to more such opportunities. Harold, a Grade 12 student passionate about designing and building VEX robots, enjoyed the two days of discussion and mutual inspiration with like-minded peers.
We all look forward to more YCYW "experience officers" visiting the Future School to share their unique experiences and unforgettable memories!
