As 2024 draws to a close, we reflect on its memorable moments. This year, artificial intelligence has become deeply embedded in our daily lives, prompting us to think about what kinds of knowledge and skills our students will need to navigate in a world full of change and uncertainty. With the rise of artificial intelligence, how should school education nurture the irreplaceable values of humanity?
These reflections have been at the heart of YCYW's initiatives in 2024. From the International Education Symposium, the Future School Programme, and the TEDx events, to the Seeds of Hope Concert and the innovative learning activities of the EdFutures Division, all represent an exploration of and response to the future of education.
In this year-end review, we have highlighted not only major events that have shaped the YCYW community in 2024, but also lesser-known stories about our students, staff, and alumni. For example, for a 9-month-old at the Yew Wah Infant and Toddler Discovery Centre, learning to crawl was as meaningful as an inter-school sporting event.
The following stories, grand and personal, are vivid footnotes that we have collectively written for 2024.
2024 began with exciting news of university acceptances for the Class of 2024. Offers from prestigious institutions such as the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, and Stanford University marked a promising start of the year.
On 26 January, YCIS Hong Kong students visited YWIES Guangzhou to celebrate "Chinese Language Week - Intangible Cultural Heritage Carnival". The students experienced the richness of traditional Chinese culture and gained an understanding of the true meaning of cultural heritage through various activities, such as the Guangdong Lion Dance, plaster moulding, and Choy Li Fut (a martial art).
YCYW partnered with Genting Snow Park to establish the "YCYW Genting Sports Development Base". Genting Snow Park was a venue for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. Through this partnership, YCYW aims to promote skiing within the YCYW Education Network.
On 22 February, YCIS Hong Kong students from Years 7 to 10 participated in their inaugural charity Walkathon to promote sustainable lifestyles.
Several significant events occurred in March.
On 1-2 March, YCYW hosted its inaugural International Education Symposium, "Transforming Education, Empowering Humanity: China's Contributions to the Understanding of International Education". This event attracted more than ten thousand participants, both in-person and online, including Chinese and international staff members, parents, and alumni.
The Seeds of Hope Concert returned after a four-year hiatus. On 16 March, more than 350 students and teachers from across various YCYW campuses gathered in Shanghai. They used music as the medium to raise funds for the Seeds of Hope programme, contributing to building a better society through practical actions.
At the end of March, YCYW launched the Future School Programme at YWIES Zhejiang Tongxiang. This programme provides students with an educational model and space that combines theoretical knowledge with practical applications, encouraging them to explore cutting-edge subjects and develop into well-rounded future talents.
On 29 March, Mr Zhang Weihua, Security Team Leader at YCIS Shanghai Pudong Century Park Campus, celebrated his last working day before his retirement. During his 13 years at YCIS, Mr Zhang earned the trust and respect of teachers, students, and parents for his rigorous work ethic and selfless dedication. The third season of the Planet Leadership Series took place in YWIES Zhejiang Tongxiang on 22 April. Ms Zhuang Yong, China's first Olympic Gold Medallist in swimming, recounted her inspiring journey of dreams, courage, and resilience forged through sports.
On 20 April, Ms Haruka Ostley, the YCYW Artist-in-Residence, hosted the "You Are Not Alone" Art & Healing Exhibition and Book Launch at the Being Art Museum in Shanghai. She demonstrated the healing power of the arts through a live-art creation performance with YCIS Shanghai teachers and students.👉 Here is Ms Haruka Ostley's story
On 30 May, YCYW held a seminar on "Exploring the Trailblazing Journey of Early Childhood Education Practice", and launched the simplified Chinese version of The Yew Chung Approach to Early Childhood Education, at YWIES Beijing Yizhuang. The Yew Chung Approach to ECE is deeply rooted in Chinese cultural traditions and values, yet embraces a global perspective, rendering it unique among international early childhood education pedagogies.
The inaugural YCYW School Games was held at YWIES Zhejiang Tongxiang from 29 to 31 May. Eighteen teams from YCYW campuses across China—Hong Kong SAR, Beijing, Shanghai, Qingdao, Yantai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, and Zhejiang Tongxiang—competed during the three days of competitions in basketball, football, and athletics.
On 14 May, 21 YWIES Shanghai Gubei students presented their architectural designs to professors from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Tongji University. The designs were the results of their studies in the EdFutures' Architecture Programme. This programme uses architectural design as a means to explore multiple perspectives on various issues.
"TEDxYouth@YCYWShanghai: Futures" was held on 15 June. Fifty five TEDx speakers from YCYW schools across China explored a wide range of topics, such as body images, gender-based violence, war, sustainable fashion, and cultural identity. These diverse topics showcased the speakers' insights on personal growth and society.
It was graduation season again! At YCYW campuses in Hong Kong SAR, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Qingdao, Yantai, and Tongxiang, the graduating class of 2024 gathered with teachers, family, and friends at graduation ceremonies. Filled with accomplishments and dreams, the graduates would soon begin new chapters in their lives.
July was the time for the YCYW Summer Camps.
Students participating in the ChinaOne Experiential Learning Programme travelled across northern and southern China. Guided by professors from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and universities, they engaged in activities ranging from paleontological fossil excavation to hotel management, and gained valuable insights into the practical aspects of their disciplines.
During the Summer Music Tour to Europe, the 13-member YCYW String Orchestra were even able to perform on the stage of the famous Vienna Musikverein, gaining an unforgettable and valuable experience.
Kiki, a 9-month-old at the Yew Wah Infant and Toddler Discovery Centre, achieved an important milestone this month—crawling on her hands and knees! Transitioning from basic crawling to this new skill indicates improved coordination and balance.
On 22 August, Southern People Weekly published an exclusive interview with Dr Betty Chan Po-king, CEO & School Supervisor of YCYW. Dr Chan's insightful views - such as "International education is not Western education"; education should be "happy" and "child-centred" – resonated with many readers.
On 24 August, the award ceremony for the third Global Chinese Writing Competition for Young Writers was held in Hong Kong SAR. Fiona, a Grade 5 student from YWIES Beijing Yizhuang, won first prize in the Global Awards with her article encouraging people to cherish and embrace their uniqueness.
On 11 September, YCYW and The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) in the United Kingdom officially announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on academic cooperation. The two institutions will cooperate and promote the development and innovations in integrating Chinese and Western education in the field of art.
Grade 1 students at YWIES Zhejiang Tongxiang completed their first fashion designs under the guidance of Mr David Leung, Director of Fashion Design at YCYW and the first Chinese designer for Versace.
On 10 October, YCYW campuses worldwide celebrated the annual Founder's Day, as well as the 10th anniversary of YWIES Guangzhou.
In her speech at the ceremony, Dr Betty Chan Po-king shared the good news that the Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education will launch the new Master of Education and Postgraduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education during the 2025-26 academic year, becoming the first private institution in the Hong Kong SAR to offer postgraduate degrees in education.
On 16 October, Yayi Chen Zhou, an alumna of YCIS Shanghai, showcased her design talents with her personal brand at Shanghai Fashion Week. She encouraged YCYW students to stay focused on what they love and always to be curious and passionate.
YCYW announced that it will introduce the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Programme into the existing curricula at YCIS Shanghai, YCIS Beijing, YCIS Qingdao, YWIES Guangzhou, and YWIES Zhejiang Tongxiang during the 2025-2026 academic year. This initiative will enable YCYW to develop a multi-faceted learning system, thereby better meeting the needs of global families for high-quality, international education.
The opening ceremony of YWIEK Shanghai Lingang concluded successfully on 5 November. The opening of this school adds new vitality to education in Lin-gang, and demonstrates YCYW's commitment to developing a high-quality education system in Lin-gang.
On 20 November, the 3rd YCIS Parent Networking Evening took place in Shanghai. The event created an unforgettable night of fun, laughter, and meaningful connections for over 200 parents.
The cross-school reading activities of the YCYW Reading Programme were in full operation in November. YCYW campuses across China were divided into six groups under the leadership of the Reading Programme Workgroup, with cooperation from all School Coordinators. Students transcended school boundaries and engaged in deep discussions, and the teachers enhanced collaboration and communication through the programme.
On 5 December 2024, B&P Culture Education Technology Group, of which YCYW is part, and the Palace Museum Training School, established by the Palace Museum, signed a cooperation framework agreement in Shanghai. The goal of this partnership is to combine their strengths in the fields of culture and education to jointly promote the inheritance and development of China's rich cultural heritage.
In the fifth season of the "My Favorite Shanghai" youth English video contest, Jasper from YCIS Shanghai won the "Best Vlog 2024" and "Foreign Experts' Favorite". He was also selected as an International Communication Youth Ambassadors. 👇Here is his award-winning vlog
